Chapter 13
Sheriff Bob Burns has held his office for over twenty years. Before that heâd been a deputy sheriff since the age of twenty so he now had thirty-five years in the business and there was little he hadnât seen before. But humans were as inventive about their mischief as they were about all else they did. The Butterfly Farm, as he called the hospital, had exposed him to some of lifeâs stranger possibilities but a shootout at the old folksâ home had stretched his experience to new latitude. And the thing wasnât as simple as it looked at
Ordinarily, you punish miscreants so they will find the straight and narrow and not go on to ruin their lives. But these two old farts had already lived most of their lives and were still acting like a couple of randy adolescents trying to prove themselves to the world.
Hell, theyâve already ruined their lives or they wouldnât be where they are. And now in Gibsonâs case, on the dead run.
Sheriff Burns takes a pull on hills and it is drizzling rain with a mist whose fingers are laced into the bare willows that follow the course of the Bear.
Winter wonât be long in coming now, he thinks as he blows pipe smoke into the room and thinks about the matters of the legal charges against both men.
Gibson was already looking at a felony assault charge, plus some miscellaneous misdemeanors that qualified him for a minimum sentence to a year in the Park County jail. But this affair would most likely mean real prison time because it comes so hard on the heels of his screw-up. The judge would have little choice but to add Armed Assault and Escape from Custody. The charge of escape alone was good for seven years and the man would be lucky to outlive that sentence.
The other man was already under a life sentence for conspiracy to commit murder and other offenses that a long-dead Utah Attorney General had conjured up. Silver had the convenience of being classified insane even though he was as normal as most on the outside. Based on what heâd learned in his investigation the guy was probably saner that most of the other denizens.
Sheriff Burns leans pushes the intercom button on his phone.
âTricia?â
âYes, Bob?â
âForward the report on Mr. Gibson to the county prosecutorâs office as soon as youâre done. Also, put a note on Silverâs paperwork that the guy is officially nuts and the county might as well save its money. I recommend no prosecution. Sign my name.â
âYessir. It was already typed up and ready to go but I can change the recommendation on Silver in a jiffy.â
The sheriff smiles because he hates it when his secretary knows what he is going to do before he does.
âOkay. Thank you.â
The Sheriff of Uinta County stands and looks back out the window. The mist and light rain fit his mood and itâs a good day for a last round of solo golf before winter makes it almost impossible to play.
